Step-by-Step Example Calculation
1. Understand Key Terms
- DFT (Dry Film Thickness): This is the thickness of the paint layer once it dries. For this example, we will use 100 microns.
- Area: The total area you wish to cover with paint, measured in square meters (m²). In our case, we will cover 100 m².
- Steel Roughness: This refers to the texture of the surface being painted. We’ll use 100 microns for this example.
- Loss Factor: This percentage accounts for paint loss during application. Here, we’ll set it at 40%.
- Volume Solids: This percentage indicates the amount of solid material in the paint. We will use 70% for this calculation.
2. Input Your Values
To calculate the total paint required, input the following values:
- DFT: 100 microns
- Area: 100 m²
- Steel Roughness: 100 microns
- Loss Factor: 40%
- Volume Solids: 70%
3. Apply the Formula
The formula to calculate the total paint required is:
- (Area * Dry Film Thickness * 100) / (10 * Volume Solids * (100 – Loss Factor)) + ((Area * Steel Rough * 0,02 / 30 ) * 100 * 100) / (Volume Solids * (100 – Loss Factor))
Plugging in our values:
- Area = 100 m²
- DFT = 100 microns
- Steel Roughness = 100 microns
- Loss Factor = 40%
- Volume Solids = 70%
4. Calculate Total Paint Required
Using the formula above, you can calculate the total paint required. For example, if the calculated result indicates you need 40 liters of Jotamastic 80 paint for your area, you would jot that down.
5. Estimate Thinner Required
It’s also important to consider the thinner needed for your paint. For the Jotun Thinner No. 17, you might require approximately 4 liters based on the total paint calculated.
Note: The quantity of thinner required is a guide only and depends on work scope and application.
6. Final Step
After calculating, you can add the paint and thinner to your project list. For instance:
- Paint: Jotamastic 80 – 40 Liters
- Thinner: Jotun Thinner No. 17 – 4 Liters
